The Smell of Leather

 What is it?

All real leather is made from animal hide, which is then tanned, dyed and finished to produce the versatile material we know as leather.

The exact smell of a given leather is determined by these four factors: (1) the hide type and then the processes of (2) tanning, (3) dyeing and (4) finishing.

1. Different hides have different smells, in much the same way as different animals have their own smells.
2. Hide tanning is a chemical process designed to physically and chemically alter the material, for the purposes of comfort, durability and workability. A variety of tanning techniques have been developed since antiquity, with many still in use today, making use of both natural and artificial agents.
3. Dying changes the colour of the tanned hide and can make use of a variety of natural and artificial dyes, each with their own effect on smell.
4. Lastly the process of finishing adds oil, wax, paint or polish to the surface and changes the surface texture of the leather. Oils and waxes can impart a considerable contribution to the final smell of a leather.

For our leather scented products, we have developed a leather scent that delivers a middle-of-the-road real leather smell that does not make use of animal hide. It is therefore suitable for use by vegans. It has not been tested on animals. It is instantly recognisable as the smell of leather. All of our leather scented products making use of our leather scent are guaranteed to make any room, shop, vehicle, handbag, pair of shoes, event, jacket or belt smell of leather!

For the most part our focus is on products with a singular scent. Our leather scented products can of course be paired with other scents for dramatic effect. Use the search bar at the top of this page to search for Sandalwood, Cedar, New Car or Pine, which all accompany leather scent very well.
